How do you treat chronic pain at your medical clinic?
When you think of pain management, you may think the only solution is prescription pain killers. These drugs often carry the danger of addiction. We prefer a drug free, nonsurgical solution: Electroanalgesia (EA) by NeuroMed. This therapy will deliver doses of electrical energy at specific places along the body to stimulate a patient’s peripheral nerves. When pain signals get transmitted to the brain, they are usually sent through the peripheral nerves. This therapy blocks those signals, preventing your mind from registering the chronic pain.
A similar therapy exists called Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation, or TENS for short. It also reduces pain by using electricity through small electrodes placed on the skin.
What the difference between EA and TENS?
When receiving therapy from a TENS device, it delivers 1 to 250 pulses per second to the treatment area with a dosage of about 25 Ma. EA will provide 8,300 to 10,000 pulses per second to the area with a dosage as high as 100 Ma. Since the skin provides naturally lower resistance to electricity, it will be delivered deep into the patient’s tissue to block pain signals.
While TENS Therapy stimulates nerves, the higher dosage and frequency from EA Therapy reduces the ability for the nerves to transmit pain. It will also promote healing in the area. Much like an epidural, this therapy will block the nerve’s ability to communicate with the brain. Instead of an injection of drugs, this system uses electricity. Our skilled doctors will know the best places for electrode placement and set the correct dosage to help treat your chronic pain.
Is Electroanalgesia widely used?
In the United States, EA is used by 2,500 doctors to treat chronic pain effectively. Some notable locations include:
- Charles R. Drew Univ. of Medicine &Science, LA, CA
- The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH
- Loma Linda University Medical Center, Loma Linda, CA
- Columbia University, New York, NY
