Annual Physical Exam Q & A

What is an Annual Physical?

Connecting with your medical provider for a physical yearly check-up is a valuable part of your preventative health care plan. Annual physicals allow your doctor to examine and evaluate your overall health and wellness, even if you are not sick. During an annual checkup, you’ll have the opportunity to share any symptoms you are experiencing and your medical provider will access how well your body is functioning. Many chronic health conditions are not identified until the advanced stages, but a preventative health screening and physical exam can help your doctor detect the early signs of disease. A yearly physical exam can help you and your doctor identify potentially serious health issues in their earliest stages and provide treatment quickly to prevent a worsening condition.

What Happens at a Yearly Checkup?

During your annual physical, your medical provider will review your personal and family medical history, and discusses any new symptoms or changes in your health you’ve experienced since your last physical.

Your doctor will also physically examines your body, checking for abnormalities, like pain, swelling, or signs of infection, and examine important information about critical body functions, such as:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Heart rhythm
  • Lung function
  • Blood pressure
  • Height and weight
  • Flexibility and strength
  • Reflexes and overall range of motion.

If your doctor detects any health issues that need to be treated, they discuss your options during your appointment. Otherwise, you can expect to return to your usual routine with no limitations.
